Tax Credits for Production of Cultural Video Games

Malta offers a wide range of business support schemes which coupled by Malta’s unrivalled tax system, could make relocation to Malta even more ideal.

Recently, Malta has launched a support measure for the Development of Video Games with a Cultural Dimension.

This scheme provides for a tax credit of up to 30% of the qualifying costs incurred for the development of cultural video game. Aid may also be awarded in the form of cash grants, although subject to cappings.

The expenditure considered as qualifying under this Scheme includes:

  • wage costs of employees engaged to develop and/or produce the cultural video game;

  • subcontracting costs incurred for the acquisition of services supporting, enhancing and complimenting the development and/or production of the cultural video game; and

  • costs of accessing third party content or copyright material which are required to be integrated in the video game.

The maximum amount of aid that may be received under this Scheme amounts to €200,000 per single undertaking over a period of 3 years. Tax credits awarded must be utilised within 3 years, after which any unutilised tax credits are forfeited.
